Former featherweight and lightweight champ of the UFC, Conor McGregor, recently spoke with Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports to discuss his main event rematch, this weekend against former interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier, at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi.
During the interview, Brontsteter asked McGregor who he thinks would be his easiest rematch. His answer won’t come as a shock to most fans.
“I’ll tell you what. This is going to be an easy rematch for me this Sunday, but it won’t be my easiest rematch,” McGregor said. “When I get my rematch against Khabib (Nurmagomedov), it will be an easy rematch, and I guarantee this. If he wants to continue running, that’s no problem. I’ll eliminate the rest of them.”
Khabib and Conor met inside the octagon back in 2018 at UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor. Nurmagomedov won the fight by rear-naked choke in the fourth round.
It has been well documented that during the lead up to their title fight, McGregor did not seem to be in the right mind state that fans and media were accustom to seeing from him.
Now that McGregor seems to have his life back in order, I believe this is a rematch a lot of fans will be calling for if he can get the victory over Poirier at UFC 257.
McGregor (21-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) did pay his respect to Poirier (26-6 MMA, 18-5 UFC) however, stating that he recognizes the body of work he’s put in against top UFC competition compared to the rest of the top ranked lightweights.
“Besides him, who ran, it is Dustin,” McGregor said. “He knocked out Justin (Gaethje), he’s beaten Dan Hooker, and (Michael) Chandler, I don’t know really. He’s come from the lower league, and he hasn’t been tested in the UFC so we’ll see.”
“I would say Dustin is right up there. That’s why I’m excited with it, and that’s why you’re gonna see the levels, and the difference in levels between myself and the top of the division.”
As usual for a McGregor fight week, McGregor is riding on a tidal wave of confidence heading into his main event bout against Poirier. Right now, he believes he’s more than just levels above the rest of his competition, and he’s looking forward to putting it on display for the world to see.
“I am in space,” McGregor said. “I am not from here. That’s where I’m at. I am from a different planet with my skillset, and I look forward to showcasing it this Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi.”
UFC 257 takes place this Saturday, January 23, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The main card will be aired live on Pay-Per-View following the prelims aired on ESPN and ESPN+.
