A lot has gone down in the UFC’s light heavyweight division this week with longtime champ, Jon Jones, releasing his title to make a move up to heavyweight and attempt to become a two-division champ.

Former light heavyweight title challenger and arguably Jon Jones’ toughest opponent to date, Dominick Reyes, spoke with ESPN and gave his take on why the now former champ decided to relinquish his title and move up a division.

“(Jon Jones) is moving to heavyweight because those guys are slow, you do realize that right? He can’t keep up with us anymore. After what Thiago and I did to him, he’s like ‘man I need to go up, these guys are getting too fast, getting too athletic, or getting too good. The heavyweights are still slow, I could go back to doing my thing against them.’ So I think he see’s that there’s better matchups for him at heavyweight than there are at light heavyweight.”

Dominick Reyes will now fight Jan Blachowicz at UFC 253: Adesanya vs. Costa, for the vacant light heavyweight title. The location for the event is still to be determined but with international fighters competing in the main event, the venue will likely be held in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, also known as Fight Island.

Multiple sources confirmed earlier this week.
