UFC welterweight champ Kamaru Usman says he’s unhappy with the performance he displayed against Jorge Masvidal.

In a recent interview with Brett Okomoto of ESPN, Usman spoke about why he appeared to have been unhappy following his victory over Masvidal at UFC 251, last July.

“After the fight I’m just like, ‘Man, I’m way better than that. I have more tools, and way more skills to display than what I showed out there.’ Because out there I just basically beat him with stuff that I’ve been doing for five years,” Usman said. “That’s just kind of how much further along I was than Masvidal. I was just doing it, basically just using the skills that I developed 5-10 years ago. And so yeah, I was a little unhappy with that, because at this point it’s me vs. me.”

“I like the Covington fight,” Usman said referring to his performance in that contest. “And the reason I love that fight is because he pushed me to be able to look at myself and say, ‘Look at all the stuff that you have in the toolbox. Throw them all out. You gotta use them.’ And I was able to use them. And it showed in that fight.”

“But with someone like Masvidal, I didn’t even have to, I didn’t even have to dig deep into the toolbox,” Usman said. “I was just like, ‘oh well, let’s just use that.’ And it all worked. So I think that is what made me a little unhappy is because me vs. me, myself looking back at how I performed, I could have got him out of there. I could have done a lot better and that’s why I was a little down about it.”

Usman has his next title defense coming up next month against former teammate and training partner, Gilbert Burns, at UFC 258 on Feb. 13. The event will be held at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
