“It’s a life or death situation type of serious, yeah.”Derrick Lewis
At the end of his interview, Monday on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Derrick Lewis told Helwani that he needs to get something checked out regarding his health before he can make any decisions about his future fight plans.
“My coach wants me to get something checked out that came up in my medicals that’s been hindering my training,” said Lewis. “The UFC doctors already know what it is and the doctors here in Houston already know as well,” he added.
Helwani then followed that up with a series of questions to make sure the UFC heavyweight wasn’t joking with him, as he’s been known to do in the past.
“Are you messing with me? You’re messing with me.”Ariel Helwani
“I’m dead serious. It’s something that happens to a lot of athletes and it doesn’t matter if you’re healthy or not. It’s something that still could happen to you at the drop of a hat. That’s all I can say.”Derrick Lewis
“Are you worried?”Ariel Helwani
“No I’m not worried.”Derrick Lewis
“When will you find out if everything’s okay?”Ariel Helwani
“Um, probably like next week I’m gonna go to the doctor, maybe this week so we’ll see.”Derrick Lewis
“Could this effect your career?”Ariel Helwani
“It could effect my life.”Derrick Lewis
It appears that Lewis was cleared by UFC officials to fight at UFC 247 with this on-going medical condition despite it being potentially life-threatening.
This may not have been the first time Lewis fought with this condition, he told Helwani that this has been going on for over a year.
“It’s been really happening for over a year. I just went to the doctor and got it checked out about a month ago,” said Lewis
The UFC heavyweight seems to be rather optomistic about this serious issue and believes he will be fine and get this taken care of before his next fight.
