On Monday, UFC shared a post on their Instagram, revealing a fight island triple-header with three big main events coming in January.
The first of three back to back fight cards will be headlined by former featherweight champ, Max Holloway, and rising featherweight contender, Calvin Kattar, Sat., Jan. 16. Other notable fights to look forward to on this card are David Zawada vs. Ramazan Emeev at welterweight, Punahele Soriono vs. Dusko Todorovic in a battle of two undefeated fighters at middleweight, and Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Li Jingliang at welterweight.
The second main event of the Fight Island triple-header will be headlined by top welterweight contender, Leon Edwards, and arguably 2020’s breakout fighter of the year, Khamzat Chimaev, Weds., Jan. 20. In this highly anticipated bout, Edwards will be looking to keep his place at the top of the UFC’s welterweight division, and potentially earn himself a title shot with a win over Chimaev. For Chimaev, he will be looking to break in to the top of the welterweight division with a win over Edwards, and prove that he belongs competing against the best the UFC has to offer. There are three other exciting fights to look out for on this card, Pedro Munhoz vs. Jimmie Rivera at bantamweight, a legends fight between Carlos Condit and Matt Brown at welterweight, and the co main event between Neil Magny and Michael Chiesa at welterweight.
The final main event of the triple header will be the long awaited rematch between former featherweight and lightweight champ, Conor McGregor, and former lightweight interim champ, Dustin Poirier, on Sat., Jan. 23, for UFC 257. Both fighters have come a long way since their first fight back in 2015. Poirier went on to defeat the best the lightweight division had to offer, eventually becoming interim champ. McGregor, like Poirier, also went on to become champion, earning titles in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions. Now at what some might call the prime of their careers, they look to meet in the octagon once again and settle the score. Other notable fights on this card are, Ottman Azaitar vs. Matt Frevola at lightweight, Shane Burgos vs. Hakeem Dawodu at featherweight, and a top lightweight contenders bout between Dan Hooker and Michael Chandler.
