Carla Esparza will finally get an opportunity to fight Rose Namajunas for the women’s strawweight championship.
The rematch between Esparza and UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas will serve as the co main event for UFC 274 on May 7. Sports Illustrated was first to report the news.
Namajunas and Esparza fought for the very first UFC women’s strawweight title back in December of 2014 for The Ultimate Fighter 20’s season finale. The fight resulted in Esparza submitting Namajunas via third round rear-naked-choke to become the first-ever women’s strawweight champion of the UFC.
Since losing to Esparza back in 2014, Namajunas has gone on to capture the strawweight title on two different occasions and has defended the belt twice.
Esparza is currently on a five-fight win streak with wins over several top contenders such as Michelle Waterson, Xiaonan Yan, and Marina Rodriguez.
UFC 274 will take place at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The card is set to be headlined by UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje for the lightweight championship.
